Six royal apartments at Stirling Castle were refurbished by Historic Scotland to reflect how the Stewart royal court would have looked in the 1540’s. This past weekend over 4500 people attended the grand opening of the apartments and they experienced the dramatic arrival of the royal procession and their entourage. Horses, guards, two queens … one as a child and one as a young woman, noblemen, courtiers, ladies-in-waiting, jesters, renaissance music and loud canon fire. The two queens were two Marys, that of Mary of Guise and her daughter, Mary Queen of Scots. It was an unsettled time in the 1540’s as the rumblings of the Reformation were creeping closer to Scotland.
